We can't wait to see you back to school starting on Monday, August 29. This year, the school day will begin at 7:50 a.m. and conclude at 2:55 p.m.

Welcome Back to School from Supt. John Williamson

On behalf of the entire Model community, we are thrilled to have students and families Back to School! We have 740 students enrolled this year (up 60 students from this time last year) as we welcome over 100 brand new families. Whether this is your inaugural year here or you're part of generations of Model alumni, I'm excited for you to experience the rich tradition of excellence Model has been known for in the Commonwealth and beyond since 1906 and continuing this very day.

I have plenty of information to share, so I'll get right to it. You'll find just about everything you'll need for a successful Back to School this year in this communication.

We’re looking forward to welcoming students on the first day of school: Monday, August 29, 2022 (7:50 a.m. - 2:55 p.m.)

  • Early drop-off at the front doors begins at 7:15 a.m. All other entrances open at 7:35 a.m. 
    • From Monday, August 29 - Thursday, September 1, Grades K-2 parents may walk their students to their classrooms. To do so, please park in the Alumni Coliseum.  
  • The Extended Learning after-school program will be available daily from 2:55 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Register your child for Extended Learning here.

Save these Dates: Tuesday & Thursday, August 23 & 25

Tuesday, August 23

  • On Tuesday, August 23 at 5:30 p.m. all new Model families are invited to attend the Welcome Cookout & Back to School Orientations, which will serve as overviews of the world-class education you can expect from Model. New families will also receive special discounts at the Patriot Shoppe for Model spirit-wear!
  • At 7:00 p.m., secondary families are invited to Meet-the-Principal to welcome Model Secondary School Principal, Dr. Holli Hunt! 

Thursday, August 25

  • On Thursday, August 25, elementary families are invited to the Elementary Meet-the-Teacher event! Families will receive their car tags for pick-up/drop-off as well as their elementary student's Apple technology (with the Receipt of the 2022-23 Student/Parent Handbook). Individual teachers will reach out in the upcoming weeks to schedule your family for a time to attend between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. 
  • Secondary families are invited to pick up a physical copy of their student's schedule, locker assignments, and brand new Apple technology on Thursday, August 25. 
    • To check out technology, students must submit the completed Receipt of the 2022-23 Student/Parent Handbook to Director of Technology, Tim Hoover (
    • Grades 6-8 are encouraged to attend from 8:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
    • Grades 9-12 are encourage to attend from 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • The Patriot Shoppe (located in the library) will be open for business!

Handbook for Students & Parents

The 2022-23 Handbook for Students & Parents, which includes Model's updated policies and procedures, is now available online.

Please review the content of the handbook carefully, print and sign the receipt available here and below to return no later than Thursday, August 25. 

Class Lists & Schedules

Elementary (Grades K-5)

Elementary homeroom assignments will be available to view in Infinite Campus on Monday, August 15.

  • New families who do not yet have access to Infinite Campus Parent Portal, you will receive instructions from the Model Counseling Office if you have not already. Contact Stephanie Clark ( for additional information.

Secondary (Grades 6-12)

Secondary course schedules are available to view through Infinite Campus beginning today, Monday, August 1. Please review your child's schedule prior to the first day of school.

New families who do not yet have access to Infinite Campus Parent Portal, you will receive instructions from the Model Counseling Office if you have not already. 

Secondary families are invited to pick up a physical copy of their student's schedule, locker assignments, and brand new Apple technology on Thursday, August 25.

EKU courses begin Monday, August 15. Model students taking EKU dual credit classes must attend classes beginning Monday, August 15. Students should check their EKU email for additional information from their instructors.

The most up-to-date version of the 2022-23 School Calendar is now available online.

  • Fall Break: Monday, October 10 - Friday October 14, 2022
  • Winter Break: Friday, December 16, 2022 - Monday, January 2, 2023
  • Spring Break: Monday, March 13 - Friday, March 17, 2023
  • Last Day of School: Wednesday, May 24, 2023 

2022-23 Activities Calendar

During the first week of school, elementary students will receive a copy of the printed activities calendar, which features artwork designed by elementary and secondary Model students! Calendars will also be available in the main office.

We hope you'll use this to appreciate the great work students are creating, but also to stay involved throughout the school year with the many exciting academic, community, and athletic events Model hosts throughout the school year.

Tuition & Fees

Universal Fees
Beginning this school year, you will see only two fee items on your 2022-23 Billing Statement in Infinite Campus.You will see "Tuition" and "Universal Fees," which now includes the annual Asset Preservation, Textbook/Workbook, and Technology fees.  

Tuition & Fees Payments
Parent(s)/Guardian(s) will be receiving a printed tuition and fees bill in the mail for the first month; printed bills will not be mailed in subsequent months as they are accurate and available through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. The first tuition and fees payment (one of ten payments total) is due Saturday, August 20.

Economically Disadvantaged Students

Model does not participate in the federal lunch program. However, economically disadvantaged students may be eligible to receive benefits such as free or reduced fee waivers on school fees as well as the national ACT and/or Advanced Placement tests.

Economically disadvantaged families may request a waiver for school fees (excluding tuition). Model parents/guardians may request to complete the Request for Fee Waiver and / or Household Verification Form (HIF); both may be returned to Laura Dedic ( no later than Thursday, September 1, 2022. Families who qualify will be notified.

Lunch Updates

Beginning this school year, Model will no longer use MySchoolBucks for school lunch payments. Lunch payments will now be processed through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal through the Food Service tab. 

Payments to Food Service may be set up on a recurring basis or as a one-time payment with an anticipated launch date of Monday, August 15. To automatically add money to a food service account on or after this date, follow the instructions available here. You will receive an update from Model via email once this feature is active.

Prior balances from MySchoolBucks accounts will roll over to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account.

Public Health Strategies at Model

COVID-19 Prevention Measures

Feel sick? Stay home! If your child feels sick or feverish, we encourage you to keep them at home until they are feeling better. 

  • In the event that a Model student tests positive for COVID-19 during the school year, we ask that you please notify Kim Puckett ( consider the medical advice of your primary care physician.

Face masks / coverings will be optional for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors during school hours and school-sponsored extracurricular activities and athletics. Masks will be available upon request during school hours.

Rapid COVID-19 tests will be available as needed for free in the nurse's office for students, faculty, and staff.

Pick-Up, Drop-Off, and Student Parking

Elementary Car Tags
Elementary families will receive their car tags during the Elementary Meet-the-Teacher event on Thursday, August 25.

High School Parking Passes
High School students who will be driving themselves to school must complete the request form and submit it for approval to Dr. Holli Hunt (

Pick-Up / Drop-Off Lines
The front doors (Entry 1) will open at 7:15 a.m. daily. Entries 3, 7, 8, 34, and 35 will open at 7:35 a.m. daily. Please familiarize yourself with the Pick-Up / Drop-Off Traffic Flow using the maps below and available online here.

Additionally, please share this information with all individuals who will be picking your student up or dropping them off for school. 

School Health Clinic Consent

If your child’s medical information has changed since March 2022, complete and submit the School Health Clinic Consent Form DUE Monday, August 29. NOTE: You do not have to complete this if your child’s medical information has not changed.

Authorized Pick-up / Sign-Out Individuals

If your child’s authorized pick-up / sign-out individuals have changed since March 2022, please email Beverly Dyehouse ( to update this information. NOTE: You do not have to do this if this has not changed. 

Athletics: Go Patriots!

The Fall Athletic teams (golf, soccer, cross country, and volleyball) have already kicked off their seasons strong. Come out and support the Patriots in action: upcoming and future athletic events are available to view on the virtual activities calendar.

Good luck to all of our student-athletes competing this season and throughout the entire school year! 

Counseling & Advising

Dr. Christopher Budano will serve as Model's Director of Advising & Counseling. Dr. Budano will lead the team of other counselors, including Secondary Counselor Rebecca Petrey ( and Elementary Counselor Cheyanne Pate (, in providing students with guidance and support.

Additionally, Dr. Budano will be working closely with each individual in the Class of 2023 to ensure that they get into the college/university of their dreams with as many scholarships and financial supports as possible. With years of experience and a passion for working with students one-on-one, Dr. Budano is well-versed as a college and career counselor and excited to continue working with Model students this upcoming school-year!

Welcome, Dr. Holli Hunt, Secondary Principal!

Dr. Holli Hunt has been named the new Secondary Principal at Model Laboratory School. Prior to accepting this position, she served as principal of Gallatin County Middle School.

Dr. Hunt began her professional career teaching middle and high school history, civics, and economics courses. Throughout her 15 years as an educator, Dr. Hunt has served in various schools as a department chair, teacher-mentor, and member of the school leadership team and Site-Based Decision-Making Council.  

Dr. Hunt earned her Ed.D in Educational Leadership from the University of the Cumberlands, as well as a Master of Arts in Education (Library Media Science) from Murray State University, a Master of Arts in Education (Curriculum and Instruction) from Ashford University, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Eastern Kentucky University.

Dr. Hunt has been married to her husband, Ryan, for over 18 years. They have three daughters: a rising sophomore and a rising fourth grader who are both excited to attend Model in the upcoming school-year, as well as a three-year-old, who will be attending the Burrier Child Development Center at EKU.

School Construction Update

July 2022 – Choosing the Right Architectural Firm for the Job 

At the beginning of the summer, dozens of architects attended a pre-bid conference at Model to explore the site, learn about the history of the current building, and discuss Model’s goals to be a true model for innovative educational design and school safety. The firm will be selected by the end of summer 2022 to begin the design process. 

October 2022 – Listening to Your Input 

As the next school year begins, Model will be hosting listening sessions with community members, including current students, parents/families, alumni, retired Model teachers, and more to hear what features you want to see in the new facility. Be sure to follow Model’s website and social media @EKUModel for the dates and times to attend!

Volunteer Training

If you're interested in participating as a volunteer in your child's classroom or at any point during the school year for in-school activities and/or in-state field trips, you are required to complete the Volunteer Training.

Training must be completed annually. Additional training is required for out-of-state and overnight field trips. At the end of the training, you will be prompted to complete a quiz; you must pass the quiz with at least an 80%.

After successfully completing this, a $15 background check fee will be applied to your account in Infinite Campus for each volunteer requested.

Students' Guide to Using School Email

For students in Grades 6-12, email is the primary method of communication between students and instructors regarding class assignments, feedback, and extracurricular activities.

Therefore, it is extremely important that all students familiarize themselves with their school email account prior to the beginning of school.

With the new school year rapidly approaching the Model Parent Organization (MPO) welcomes you to Model. Please follow us on Facebook @ModelParentOrganization, Inc. Also sign up to volunteer and be placed on our email list at the link available here.
Anyone who signs up for our email list will receive one of the exclusive new Model magnets sent home with your child for your automobile.

Beginning in August, we will be emailing out our monthly MPO newsletter to keep you up to date on what’s happening with MPO. Below, you will also receive the information to sign up for the Kroger fundraising initiative. Changes have been made with Kroger and you must sign up each year during the month of August.

We Need Your Help! This year we are planning for many great events and fundraisers! Boosterthon, our biggest fundraiser of the year, will be held in February. Some of our other events will be, new parents cookout, staff cookout, whole school pizza party, teacher appreciation programs, whole school ice cream party, grandparents day, fall festival, Santa workshop and many more. As a parent you are automatically a member of the Model Parent Organization and it takes lots of volunteers to run these programs and fundraisers for our students, teachers and school!

You Are the Future of Model Parent Organization! Parent participation is essential to ensure these activities continue.
